For many men, growing a beard isn't as simple as avoiding the razor and letting nature take its course. Stubble doesn't always grow at the same percentage, resulting in patchy facial hair instead of a smooth beard.
Or you may have inherited genes that make any type of beard nearly impossible.
However, just like you can transplant your own hair on top of your head to deal with hair loss, you can also try a beard transplant if your beard roots aren't cooperating.
A doctor will first need to assess your skin and hair to make sure you're a good candidate, and then you'll need to decide if it's worth it.
Like any medical procedure, there is no 100% guarantee that you will be satisfied with the results. Beard transplant scars are always a risk.
But if you can find a qualified provider, it may be worth considering at least whether a few hours in a doctor's office can provide beard life.
What is a beard implant?
Beard transplantation is exactly that: hair taken from one part of the body is planted on your jaw line and where you want your beard to grow.
It sounds simple enough, but it's quite a complex process. A surgeon can take two main approaches :
Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). This approach is done by harvesting all the follicular units one at a time from the donor area. FUE is less painful, which may explain why it is a more common procedure.
Follicular Unit Transplantation (FUT). For this approach, a surgeon cuts a small strip of tissue from the back of the head and extracts hair follicles from this tissue.
The follicular unit is a small group made up of several hair follicles that can exit through the skin from the same exit point.
Both procedures take 2,000 to 5,000 or more hair follicle grafts from the back of your head, usually at or slightly below your ears, and implant them into your face.
A graft is a transplanted hair follicle.
Whether you choose to have FUE or FUT, your surgeon's first step will be to shave the area on your head.
This gives them a clearer view of the hair follicles. Before harvesting begins, you will be given a local anesthetic so that you won't feel shaving or planting.
Beard transplant
After the follicles are removed from your head, the surgeon will inject a local anesthetic into the area of your face where the implants will be placed. Then the surgeon will place each follicle on your face and shape your new beard as agreed with your doctor before surgery.
Recovery
You will need a day to recover from beard implant surgery. Small scabs may form around each newly transplanted hair follicle, but these should fall off within a few days.
After about a week to 10 days, you can start shaving normally and trimming your new beard.
But a warning : Your new beard hairs may fall out after 2-3 weeks. This is normal and new hair must grow to take its place.
